Many candidates who arrived at us for resume help have exactly the same question. They have years of professional work experience, but a lot of it isn't strongly related the position they're currently seeking. On the main one hand, they don't wish to waste resume space detailing work that doesn't relate to their application. On another hand, they don't wish to omit years of work that developed them as a professional.

 

THE RIGHT PHRASE

 

I make use of a magic SMEs to deal with this issue: "additional experience includes ".It's perfectly all right to sum up large portions of one's career in a single sentence that lists previous employers or positions. This technique can be very useful to those who are concerned with age discrimination. I summarized the first 15 years of 1 candidate's career into one sentence to downplay the fact that she was 55. Because her experience was strongly related her field, removing it from her resume entirely would have been a disservice, but we didn't range from the years that experience encompassed.

 

THE EXPERIENCE ISSUE

 

I recently caused another candidate who used this technique to show that she was a more knowledgeable professional than her education suggested. This woman had worked for 10 years before returning to accomplish her bachelor's degree. From taking a look at her graduation dates, you would think that she was in her 20s. Actually, she was an experienced manager in her 30s-a fact which was important to show for the amount of job she was seeking.

 

Most of us have work experience that doesn't fit neatly with your current goals and objectives.
